What Spirit Communication Really Feels Like: A Medium’s Perspective

If you’ve ever wondered what spirit communication actually feels like, you’re not alone.

One of the most common questions I get as an evidential medium is: “How do you receive messages from Spirit?”

The answer? It’s a lot like tuning into a radio station.

Imagine you’re in your car, trying to find that perfect station. You know it’s out there; you’ve heard it before, but sometimes the signal is strong and clear, and other times, it’s fuzzy, fading in and out. You might catch a lyric or a phrase, then static… and suddenly, it’s back again.

That’s what connecting with Spirit often feels like for a medium.

We’re not hearing voices the way Hollywood might make it seem. Mediumship is more subtle and sacred. It’s energy-to-energy communication, like tuning into a unique frequency, once we find that “station,” we begin to receive impressions.

But here’s the key: once those impressions come through, the medium’s brain steps in to interpret them using our personal database of memories, emotions, and experiences.

For example, if Spirit sends me the feeling of snorkeling, but I’ve never been snorkeling, I might not describe it exactly. Instead, I might say “they’re showing me a day out on the water,” or “they’re referencing some kind of ocean activity.” I’m interpreting the feeling the best I can with the reference points I have.

This is why no two mediums receive Spirit communication the same way. Each of us has our own life experiences, and Spirit works through those personal filters. What comes through is genuine and heartfelt—but always flavored by the medium’s unique point of view.

It’s also why evidential mediumship is such a beautiful practice. We’re not guessing, we’re receiving and interpreting signs, symbols, feelings, and impressions that hold meaning and validation for you, the sitter.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what spirit communication is like behind the scenes, know this:

Spirit doesn’t shout. It whispers.

And when we quiet ourselves enough to listen, even the softest message can come through loud and clear.

Looking to connect with your loved ones in Spirit? I'd love to help you connect!
